Pain relief and mobility through adjustment
Chiropractors adjust spines and joints that have become restricted in their motion or movement, usually resulting from tissue. This damage could be from a single event, such as improperly lifting a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position for an extended period of time. This injured tissue can cause inflammation, pain and diminished function. Scar tissue—also known as tissue fibrosis—is a late effect of inflammation and can form if the injury is not properly treated. Manipulating or adjusting the affected joints and tissue restores mobility, alleviates pain and muscle tightness and allows the tissue to heal.
Besides adjusting, we use many other therapies, including laser, Kinesio Tape, electric stimulation, heat, ultrasound and Graston Technique®. Graston is one way to address tissue damage. It’s an innovative form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis.
Because tissue damage can lead to further injury or can even require surgery if ignored, it’s best to seek treatment for the initial injury. Apex Wellness focuses on “prehabilitation” to help patients heal without surgery when possible, and physical rehabilitation after a surgery. Apex Wellness can also help athletes prevent sports injuries and find healing after an injury, and has a certified chiropractic sports physician on staff.
This ancient tradition brings relaxation and pain relief
There are a wide variety of massage techniques, and massage therapy’s benefits are just as varied, from relaxation and stress relief to injury recovery and managing chronic pain. Massage therapy reduces muscle tension, stress and fatigue, and improves circulation.
The main styles of massage therapy are Therapeutic/Deep Tissue Massage and Relaxation/Swedish Massage.
Therapeutic/Deep Tissue Massage
This is a restorative, pain-relieving massage that’s often appropriate to help muscles heal after an accident or car collision. Although all massage treatments are therapeutic by nature, this massage goes beyond its Swedish base, bringing additional techniques, deeper pressure and specific focus to areas of the body that need extra attention. Deep tissue work is used, as well as stretching, passive range of motion, trigger point therapy, myofascial release and more.
This massage for relaxation brings a healthy balance to the body – it decreases stress and muscle tension, increases circulation and helps restore the mind-body connection. It’s what we think of as a traditional massage, incorporating soothing strokes that glide and knead. Pressure ranges from light to medium and oils or lotions are often used. Along with increased relaxation and circulation, this style of massage can be extremely effective in releasing areas of muscle tension and soreness.
Apex also offers a variety of other massage techniques, including craniosacral therapy, maternity massage and structural integration.
Harmonize your body and mind for lasting wellness
Acupuncture is a traditional form of medicine from China that encourages the body to promote natural healing and to improve function. This is done by inserting very fine, disposable needles into specific points along the body and possibly adding heat or electrical stimulation to the needle.
Chinese Medicine is often used in conjunction with acupuncture. Chinese herbs are sourced from plants, animals and minerals, and are used to treat a wide variety of illnesses or painful conditions. These herbs can help the body’s systems heal and work more efficiently.
Practitioners may also use tuina, cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, or nutrition and lifestyle coaching. Tuina (pronounced “twee na”) is a Chinese massage that breaks up adhesions between muscles that result from traumatic or chronic injuries. It includes the use of pressure on acupuncture points and along their channels, and assisted movement to restore normal joint motion. Moxibustion is a traditional heat therapy used to increase blood flow, improve immune function or deliver deep relaxation. Gua sha is a technique to promote normal circulation and to relieve pain, stiffness, cough, fevers and other complaints.
